During an appearance on "Pat McAfee Show," Pittsburgh Pirates starting pitcher Paul Skenes acknowledged that the traffic cone being used in the team's dugout celebrations likely was stolen from a parking lot during a recent series against the Cincinnati Reds at Great American Ball Park.
The Pirates lost the series opener to the Reds, but won the next two games at GABP - including Skenes' start - to take the three-game series.
"We got a traffic cone before I think the Tuesday game in Cincinnati," Skenes told McAfee. "Yeah, what the heck does 'hoist the cone' mean? There's probably a player's parking spot in Cincinnati that it was … after (Jake) Mangum brought it in. He probably just stole it from a parking lot somewhere. But we got it. And it's made its way back to Pittsburgh."
The cone was acquired, Skenes said, based on a Pirates-themed T-shirt from Fanatics that oddly read, "hoist the cone."
McAfee asked Skenes how long he expects the cone celebration to last.
"I really hope so," Skenes said. "The dugout stuff, in my experience, happens organically. It's not something you force. So, the cone's here. I think it's here to stay. We'll see. You know, hopefully it lasts all the way into October, deep into the season."
MLB.com's Jason Mackey reported that Mangum had assistance from a GABP attendant.
"Once [Pirates assistant clubhouse manager] Nik Cook slapped a Pirates sticker on that thing, it was over," Mangum said. per Mackey. "You have to direct some traffic home sometimes, man."
