Pirates Believe They 'Need To Find A Way To Win' In Paul Skenes' Starts originally appeared on SportsNet Pittsburgh. Add SportsNet Pittsburgh as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Pittsburgh Pirates lost another Paul Skenes start.
Pittsburgh dropped the series opener to the Cincinnati Reds on Friday by a score of 6-4, as Skenes allowed four runs on six hits in just five innings. It was a disappointing start for Skenes who allowed four runs in the second inning.
“Just couldn't get that punchout pitch a little bit and the at-bats ran long,” Skenes said postgame on Friday. “They did a good job.”
However, Pirates manager Don Kelly believes Pittsburgh has to find ways to win when Skenes starts, which the team hasn’t been able to do.
“I think it does get frustrating for Paul, for the team, for everybody, for me, when Paul has a start and we don't win. We need to find a way to win,” Kelly said.
Skenes is now 6-7 with a 3.10 ERA in 17 starts and the right-hander hasn’t won a game in June since his rookie season in 2024. He also hasn’t recorded a win since May 12. Despite that, Skenes believes he’s pitching well.
“I'm happy with it overall,” Skenes said of his 2026 season thus far. “I think it's been a little bit odd. But in terms of the controllables, I've been happy with how I've been throwing and just gonna continue to get better.”
The Pirates will look to even up the series on Saturday at 4:05 p.m. ET.
