The Philadelphia 76ers have wrapped up most of their offseason business, but there is still one roster spot remaining that possibly be left open for a certain future Hall of Famer.

There is no secret that the Sixers are interested in LeBron James. The 41-year-old is set to enter year 24 and try to chase one last championship and Philadelphia appears to be squarely in the conversation to sign him. A starting lineup of Tyrese Maxey, VJ Edgecombe, Jaylen Brown, Joel Embiid, and James will arguably be the best lineup in the East and Philadelphia would then have Dean Wade, Anfernee Simons, Labaron Philon Jr. and Dominick Barlow off the bench. That is a strong roster overall.

However, Boston Celtics legend Paul Pierce is taking issue with the possibility of James joining Philadelphia:

If LeBron goes to Philly, it takes him totally out the GOAT debate...No player that we consider that’s been in a GOAT debate has been a fourth option. No, seriously. Like (Michael) Jordan, even when he went to the Wizards, was still the first option. Kareem (Abdul-Jabbar) was second option with Magic (Johnson). Like when we start having these debates about the GOAT and we say, well, you know, Philly won a championship, but he was fourth option. He has five rings, but fourth and fifth option. So, it’ll do something to his legacy. I really believe that. Like GOATs don't take backseats to nobody that wasn't considered a GOAT themselves, you know what I'm saying?

Pierce has always been one to voice his opinion, especially when it comes to James, but there could be some truth to what he's saying. Players of James' caliber don't take backseats to many players, but on the flip side, he's also 41 and averaging over 20 points in the NBA still. That in itself is super impressive. If he were to join the Sixers, it would be a big boost to Philadelphia's title chances for the 2026-27 season.
