Just because a player is taking on a certain role on an NBA team does not necessarily mean they are not capable of taking on a larger one. And that was a point that Boston Celtics Hall of Fame forward Paul Pierce was making on an episode of the "No Fouls Given" podcast while talking about the breakout season of Jaylen Brown.

"I truly believe he always could do this," said the Truth of Brown's Most Valuable Player-caliber season with Boston currently unfolding. He’s asked to do more now. Just for instance ... James Harden left (the Oklahoma City Thunder). Do you believe James Harden could always do what he did in Houston if he stayed in OKC? Same here with Jaylen Brown, because Tatum’s not there."

"He's got more," said Pierce. "He’s the guy now. He always could do that, but if you have to play within a system where you don’t have to do that, you can’t show it."

"When we saw Harden go from OKC to Houston, we was like, ‘Damn, he went from Sixth Man of the Year to an MVP-caliber player.’" continued the former Celtic. "Did you think that was just luck, or he always knew he could do that?"

"That’s why he left that role. But he knew he could be that because he was getting held back because of the talent that was in OKC. Same with Jaylen Brown. That’s what worked, and that’s what won them a chip."
