The New England Patriots made it to the Super Bowl last year, but came up short against the Seattle Seahawks. For 2026, the team is still very good and might be even better with AJ Brown now in-house.

However, if there was one question mark beyond how the new-look offense gels, it would be the defensive side of the ball. Specifically, the edge rusher room is a little bit of an unknown.

While it's not a terrible group, the Patriots could use one more solid edge rusher. That's why ESPN's Seth Walder proposed a trade idea with the New York Giants that would land former first-round edge Kayvon Thibodeaux with the Patriots in an interesting deal.

"Patriots receive: Edge Kayvon Thibodeaux, 2027 fifth-round pick. Giants receive: 2027 third-round pick," Walder proposed. "... The Patriots fit the bill and then some, because Thibodeaux offers long-term upside if New England decides to re-sign him."

The Patriots might not seem like an edge-rusher-needy team on paper, with Harold Landry III and Dre'Mont Jones leading the way. But, they're a bit older, and Gabe Jacas is their top depth piece.

Being able to land Thibodeaux in a deal with the Giants, especially if it's the one that Walder proposed, would be a massive win for the Patriots.

While Thibodeaux did only play 10 games last year and record 2.5 sacks in a bit of a disappointing season for the Giants, with the Patriots, he'd be the No. 1 edge rusher, and could benefit from a change of scenery.

Besides, he's hitting free agency after 2026, and regardless of whether he comes back or not, the Patriots would walk away from this deal fairly happy.

Landing Thibodeaux for a season and re-signing him would mean he played well enough for the Patriots to run it back. And if he leaves, then the Patriots would receive a compensatory pick on top of the fifth-rounder they'd get in this trade idea.

There's a real scenario with this trade idea where Thibodeaux lands in New England, helps lead the Patriots defense to a great year, and leaves in free agency, landing a third-round compensatory pick alongside the fifth-rounder they got in the idea Walder pitched.

This trade idea from Walder would be a very nice one for the Patriots ahead of the 2026 NFL season, and if there is a real chance Thibodeaux is available, New England should be in hot pursuit of a high-upside former first-round edge rusher.
