The Patriots took a notable step last week by cutting quarterback Joshua Dobbs, raising the question of what New England will do next to back up Drake Maye.
New England re-signed No. 3 QB Tommy DeVito this offseason, but could anyone trust him to step up and lead the Patriots for a few games if Maye were to miss some time?
While there are a handful of veteran quarterbacks available on the open market, ESPN's Patriots reporter Mike Reiss doesn't sense that New England will go that route and would rather draft a rookie quarterback as an addition to its roster.
"One trickle-down effect of the Patriots releasing veteran quarterback Joshua Dobbs last week is that they now are more likely to draft a signal-caller -- or sign one as a priority undrafted free agent -- and rely on the proven expertise of (Josh) McDaniels and quarterbacks coach Ashton Grant to develop him," Reiss wrote on Sunday.
If the Patriots are aiming to bring in a rookie quarterback during the draft, there are several prospects they might want to consider. Reiss highlighted former Clemson quarterback Cade Klubnik and former Illinois quarterback Luke Altmyer as candidates worth keeping an eye on.
