What does the New England Patriots’ decision to release Joshua Dobbs mean for the franchise in 2026?

The Patriots will move forward with AP NFL MVP runner-up Drake Maye as their starting quarterback next season. Dobbs’ departure does not change that.

What it does change is Tommy DeVito now getting the call to lead the Patriots’ offense in the event that Maye ever has to miss time in 2026.

DeVito signed a two-year deal with the Patriots as a restricted free agent this offseason to remain in New England. With Dobbs no longer the backup, the Patriots are expected to roll with DeVito as their QB2 next season.

According to MassLive’s Mark Daniels, Dobbs did set out to be “helpful and part of a healthy QB room,” with Maye, and did so for New England last season. His veteran presence was felt in the Patriots’ locker room, as he helped New England wage a run to the Super Bowl in 2026.

Then there’s the draft. The Patriots are not expected to take a quarterback in the first round with the No. 31 overall pick. That does not eliminate the possibility of New England selecting a quarterback in the later rounds.

Miami quarterback Carson Beck, LSU's Garrett Nussmeier and Illinois' Luke Altmyer are all prospects expected to be selected outside of the first round. The Patriots will have the opportunity to add a third prospect to their quarterback room for next season following Dobbs’ departure.
