While veterans A.J. Brown and Romeo Doubs have brought an influx of star power to the Patriots wide receiver room, Kyle Williams is looking to make his presence felt in his second season.

As a rookie, Williams showed flashes of explosiveness, but finished the season with 10 catches for 207 yards and three touchdowns. As he tries to make more of an impact in Year 2, wide receivers coach Todd Downing believes he took a step in the right direction during spring practices.

“Some of those little details, the route tops, the play strength, proper footwork, who he has in the run game, blocking for us: All those things I think are a little bit cleaner to him,” Downing said. “The picture is a little bit slower to him than it was last year. Really pleased with where he’s at. He’s been working his tail off. He’s moving all over the place, handling a big role. So very pleased.”

The 5-foot-11 wideout told ESPN that he added five to eight pounds in the offseason, jumping from 185 pounds to between 190 and 193, and Downing believes that’s showing up on the field.

“I can see him playing sturdier,” Downing said. “I can see him doing a better job through contact. Certainly not avoiding reroutes and zones and things of that nature. Working through shoulders and he’s doing a great job.”

On a crowded wide receiver depth chart, Williams will need to earn his snaps this season. In addition to Brown and Doubs, the Patriots still have Kayshon Boutte, Mack Hollins, Pop Douglas and Efton Chism in the fold, among others.
