Gabe Jacas hasn’t been with the Patriots through OTAs and mandatory minicamp. He did, however, take in rookie camp in May from the sidelines.
Patriots coach Mike Vrabel said the second-round draft pick underwent a procedure, but it wasn’t clear what the procedure was for.
Jacas also isn’t under contract. ESPN’s Mike Reiss shed light on what the holdup might be.
“One high-ranking NFL executive hypothesized that the Patriots are likely seeking a level of financial protection in the contract based on the medical procedure, which would explain the holdup,” Reiss wrote.
Two sources from different NFL teams told Reiss that “their clubs gave Jacas a passing grade on his physical exam, although both noted a labral tear in his shoulder that could eventually require medical attention.”
Another noted there was a stress fracture in Jacas’ foot that “could potentially worsen over time.”
“A source familiar with Jacas’ recovery said he underwent a knee procedure that was described as a “clean-up,” Reiss wrote. “It is not known whether something happened after Jacas’ physical exam and subsequent recheck at the combine, or when the Patriots had him in for a predraft visit the week of April 20, and that information wasn’t disclosed to the team.”
The procedure Jacas underwent isn’t expected to impact his availability for 2026, and a source told Reiss that the hope is he’s ready for training camp later this summer.
Patriots outside linebackers coach Mike Smith revealed Tuesday that Jacas will be behind after missing both summer workouts.
The Patriots drafted Jacas in the second round of the 2026 NFL Draft. Edge rusher was a major need for New England and helped fill that role by using the 55th overall pick.

The 22-year-old figured to play a big role for the Patriots defense in 2026. During his 2024 season at Illinois, Jacas led the school with eight sacks, three forced fumbles and 13 tackles for loss. He earned Third Team All-American honors that season.
Last season, Jacas again led Illinois in sacks (11) forced fumbles (three) and tackles for loss (13.5) en route to Second Team All-Big Ten Honors.
