Rob Gronkowski smiled when asked by Kay Adams if he was aware of what Josh McDaniels said about A.J. Brown, the Patriots newest receiver.
He knew McDaniels had tossed out Gronk’s name when asked if the former Eagles receiver reminded him of any player he had coached.
“I love that comparison,” Gronkowski said Monday on “Up & Adams. ”That was really cool to see him say that."
Last week, McDaniels told reporters his rationale for making the comparison to his former tight end. He thought Brown had a similar skillset to Gronkowski.
“Big, physical, aggressive, explosive, really good hands,” McDaniels said of Brown, the Patriots new No. 1 receiver. “He’s just a really competitive guy when you watch him play. There’s force to the way he plays the game.”
Gronkowski, who was voted into the team’s Hall of Fame earlier in the year, was certainly a force. He didn’t argue with McDaniels’ line of thinking.
“Josh McDaniels knows what he’s talking about, and I understand what he’s saying,” Gronkowski said. “A.J. Brown is a big body out there. He’s a force to be reckoned with. He’s a guy that takes attention from the defense even when the ball’s not going to him. Even with a run play, you’re still going to have attention.”

Gronkowski drew that type of coverage when he was catching passes from Tom Brady.
“It brings another level to the offense,” Gronkowski said. “A.J. Brown is that big-bodied guy who can move, and it’s hard to be that big, and to move. And Josh McDaniels saw that in myself. He sees that in A.J. Brown, as well.”
Gronkowski said Brown gets open the same way he did -- by bulldozing through people.
“A.J. Brown uses his body to get open. That’s how I got open a lot,” Gronkowski said. “I was never really running by guys. I used my body, blocked out guys, and Tom (Brady) would put the ball where I could only go up (and get it). That’s the same with A.J. Brown. That’s probably what Josh McDaniels sees in him. A.J. Brown is always open because he’s such a big-bodied guy with great hands.”
Gronkowski also sees the addition of Brown as enhancing their chances to be Super Bowl contenders in the upcoming season.
“They definitely have a chance. They needed this trade,” Gronkowski said of the defending AFC champs. “They needed that No. 1 receiver in order to compete again, to get back to the Super Bowl or at least get back to the playoffs and have Super Bowl aspirations and be able to be a contender.
“They got Romeo Doubs as well. Their offense is complete. Their defense is very solid. So I see them having another solid year. But that A.J. Brown trade and having him as their No. 1 now elevated this roster big time.”
