Patriots' TreVeyon Henderson Continues to Struggle in One Key Area, Per Report originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
It'll be a big year for multiple players on the New England Patriots roster for more reasons than just them playing well. One guy in particular who many are hoping continues to take a step in the right direction is TreVeyon Henderson.
Henderson finished his rookie season with 911 yards on 180 carries, including nine touchdowns. However, there were times when he didn't come into the game when many thought he should.
According to the latest from a Patriots insider, it's possible that Henderson could find himself in similar spots on third down.
The problem for Henderson throughout training camp is that he continues to struggle in pass protection, which could lead to New England keeping him out of the game on third down. Outside of that, however, there really doesn't seem to be much to complain about regarding the 23-year-old's game.
“RB TreVeyon Henderson: It’s looked a bit like last season: big, explosive plays, but just enough mistakes in pass protection that it feels like a risk to use him on third downs. If he can improve in that skill, though, look out,” Chad Graff wrote.
Pass protection for a running back is very important, but at Henderson's size, it's not surprising to hear that he struggles with it.
The problem is that he was very bad in pass protection last season, so the Patriots have to be smart about the certain sets they put him in. Regardless, even if he struggles in that regard this year, there's still lots of hope for him to continue taking another step up.
