Patriots' Mike Vrabel Reveals If A.J. Brown's Contract Situation Will Keep Him From Taking Field originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The New England Patriots acquired A.J. Brown from the Philadelphia Eagles, and there are questions about whether his contract will need to be tweaked.
Brown will have a $7.04 milllion cap hit for the Patriots next season. His cap hit will be $10.9 million in 2027, $17.8 million in 2028, $23.6 million in 2029 and $53.5 million in 2030, which is a void year, according to Spotrac. It's not uncommon for players to restructure deals with their new teams after they are traded.
However, it does not seem like Brown's contract was the key factor in his getting traded. Vrabel was asked whether Brown's current contract would be a problem for him and potentially keep him from taking the field. There seems to be a belief that Brown will want a new deal, but Vrabel does not anticipate that any contract issues will keep him from taking the field right now.
"He's been here a day," Vrabel emphasized in his press conference on Tuesday. "The plan is for him to practice and try to get acclimated. I don't see anything that would preclude him from doing that right now. I'm just excited to add the player and the football team is looking forward to having him and whatever that looks like today. By all accounts, he's ready to go."
Brown signed a three-year, $96 million extension with the Eagles before the 2024 season. He had $84 million guaranteed to him on that extension. The Patriots could look to restructure his deal to give them some more flexibility, but his cap hits are not going to be a real problem until 2029.
He will not be a free agent until 2030, so it does seem too early to start talking about extensions. However, it is a massive contract, and it would not be a surprise to see something get tweaked. However, Vrabel does not think it will be an issue for Brown to play on his current deal. He was seen walking out to practice on Tuesday, so it looks like there is not going to be some kind of contract holdout after the trade.
