Mike Vrabel Addresses A.J. Brown Character, Attitude Concerns After Patriots Trade originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The New England Patriots made a major move on Monday to acquire A.J. Brown from the Philadelphia Eagles, but it does not come without some concern.
There are very few doubts about what Brown can do on the field. He is a three-time Pro Bowler and has over 5,000 receiving yards in the last four seasons. He helped take the Eagles to two Super Bowls and won one of them. However, his time in Philadelphia did raise some concerns about his character and his attitude.
Brown's relationship with Jalen Hurts was a major talking point last season. He even admitted that the two are not as close now as they once were in an interview after he was traded to New England. His antics on the sideline were often headlines. He was once seen reading a book on the sideline when there were reports that he was upset with his target share. In his final game with the Eagles, he was seen getting into a screaming match with Nick Sirianni.
Mike Vrabel was asked on Tuesday whether there are any concerns about Brown's attitude now that he is on the Patriots, and how he can be sure it won't be a problem.
"I can't say that there's not going to be things that come up with A.J., with any single player," Vrabel said when asked how he can be confident that Brown won't be a distraction. "I think this is a competitive game. Highly competitive. Players want to win. Players want to do everything that they can to help their team. They want to make sure that people are on the right page. I think what's most important is that those things don't carry into the locker room, that they get handled. You see that all the time on the sidelines. We want to have conversations in the meeting room. We want to have conversations at practice.
"Sometimes those conversations are animated, but it's all in the sake of trying to get on the same page and get right. Again, I don't know what happened. I'm not trying to figure out what happened in Philadelphia. I'm trying to focus on what's going to happen here, and trying to get him acclimated to what we do and how we do it."
Vrabel has experience working with Brown, and the two have a strong relationship. However, Vrabel understands that Brown is a competitive player and thinks everything he does in New England will be in the interest of winning.
