New England Patriots coach Mike Vrabel let A.J. Brown know exactly what he needs from him following the franchise’s trade for the superstar wide receiver on Monday.

In an exclusive interview with Maria Taylor on the “7PM in Brooklyn” podcast, Brown revealed what Vrabel told him in his first text message after news of the trade broke.

“Get open and catch the ball,” Brown said. “And that’s what he always says. That’s all he said. And that’s what he said when he drafted me in Tennessee, and that’s what he said again.”

Brown played for Vrabel on the Tennessee Titans from 2019-21. The two led the Titans to three playoff appearances and two AFC South division crowns in that span.

Vrabel will have the luxury of having Brown as his leading receiver once again in 2026. Brown went for 1,000 yards receiving for the sixth time in his career last season and looked every bit like a top option capable of approximating the value that Stefon Diggs gave to the team in 2025.

He will have star teammates around him to attract attention from opposing defenses and help him get open next season.
