Jonathan Taylor is a player that the New England Patriots had a chance to build around in 2020.
Taylor is not a free agent or on the trade block this offseason. However, the Patriots had another avenue to add the former First-Team All-Pro running back in 2020.
New England selected safety Kyle Dugger with the No. 37 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. Dugger became a full-time starter for the Patriots in his second season in the league in 2021. The 29-year-old has recorded 11 interceptions in his six-year career in the NFL.
Here’s who the Patriots had the opportunity to select at No. 37 overall that year, including Taylor — the two-time NFL rushing touchdowns leader.
No. 41 overall pick in 2020: Indianapolis Colts
Taylor established himself as a 1,000-yard rusher with pass-catching capabilities out of the gate in 2020 as a rookie. The Wisconsin product went for 1,169 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns for the Colts as a rookie. He also registered 299 receiving yards that season. Taylor went on to lead the league in rushing in 2022 with 1,811 yards. He also led the league in rushing touchdowns in 2021 and 2025 with 18.
No. 51 overall pick in 2020: Dallas Cowboys
Diggs impressed with three interceptions, one forced fumble and one sack in his rookie season for the Cowboys in 2020. He then went on to have a season to remember in 2021, where he led the NFL in interceptions with 11. The Maryland product recorded at least one interception in each of the first six games of the 2025 season on his way to First-Team All-Pro honors.
