A former New England Patriots player may have suffered a devastating injury.
Gunner Olszewski was carted off the field during Friday's practice. Per ESPN's Adam Schefter, the New York Giants are worried that the wide receiver tore his Achilles.
Olszewski will undergo further testing to verify the diagnosis.
The Patriots signed Olszewski as an undrafted free agent out of Bemidji State, a Division II program, in 2019. He found his footing as an All-Pro special teamer in 2020, returning 18 kickoffs for 418 yards and 20 punts for 346 yards and a touchdown.
Olszewski played 16 games with New England the following season before signing a two-year deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Released during the 2023 season, he found a new home with the Giants.
A groin injury ended his 2024 season right as it started, but Olszewski bounced back to tally 273 yards and a touchdown on 23 punt returns last year. He also collected a career-high 145 receiving yards and threw a 33-yard touchdown pass to quarterback Jameis Winston.
Olszewski sustained a concussion in a Week 13 loss to the Patriots after getting hit hard on a kick return. He returned three weeks later and closed the season with eight catches for 102 yards in a Week 18 win over the Dallas Cowboys.
The Athletic's Dan Duggan reported that Olszewski suffered a non-contact injury while running a route during Friday's practice. Duggan noted that the 29-year-old "immediately showed significant frustration and appeared to grab at his right lower leg."
