Denver Broncos coach Sean Payton and quarterback Bo Nix went viral last season after Fox cameras caught them in a heated sideline exchange during a game against the Las Vegas Raiders.
We later learned that Nix had flipped a play that Payton did not want flipped, and though the result was a touchdown pass, the coach was not happy with Nix overruling his instruction. Although they had a heated exchange in the moment, Payton later downplayed it and even indicated that he liked seeing that kind of fiery passion from his quarterback.
In case you missed it in October (or just want to watch it again), here's the moment:
The incident was brought in by DJ Siddiqi of RQ.org in his recent interview with star cornerback Pat Surtain, who also brushed off the dustup.
“Obviously, everybody was talking about that little confrontation on the sideline — but I wouldn’t call it a confrontation,” Surtain told Siddiqi. “Two guys who want to do what’s best for the team. They both have their different views of things, but when you have two guys like that, it just brings respect upon both of them and it makes the team better.”
PS2, like Payton, took it more as a positive moment than a negative incident.
“At the end of the day, we realize as a player that’s pushing the coach towards success, and as a coach pushing the player towards success,” Surtain told Siddiqi. “That brings the utmost confidence in the team and the utmost confidence in themselves.”
The Broncos went on to win 34-18, and they finished the year with a 10-7 record and qualified for the playoffs for the first time since 2015, so that exchange between Payton and Nix clearly wasn't a deterrent to the team's success. In fact, one could argue that it was a key moment in the season that helped Payton and Nix reach another level in their QB-coach relationship.
