For a second straight summer, Carolina Panthers wideout Jimmy Horn Jr. is fighting for his spot.
The second-year pass catcher was a topic of discussion for head coach Dave Canales following Wednesday's outing of training camp. Canales was asked about Horn's performance in last Thursday night's Hall of Fame Game, as well as his outlook to make the initial 53-man roster.
"Really, Jimmy made a great case," Canales replied. "I think we talked the week before—just opportunities. The ball just wasn't finding him in practice. But all of a sudden, you get in a game—he's still fast, he's still tough, he's still competitive. And all of a sudden, he's making these plays that we've been wanting to see him make.
"So, he really did a great job representing himself in that game and just getting a few more reps with the first group and second group during practices."
That game saw Horn record a team-leading 44 receiving yards on four catches in the 33-30 victory over the Arizona Cardinals. One of those grabs came on the final drive for Carolina—as he picked up a 12-yard gain to set the offense up at Arizona's 5-yard line. Quarterback Haynes King, three plays later, would rush in the game-winning, 5-yard touchdown.
Horn, a sixth-round pick from the 2025 NFL Draft, was able to make last season's initial roster as one of seven wideouts. He'd go on to appear in 13 games, amassing 11 receptions for 108 yards.
His spot for this year is no sure thing—with fellow receivers Brycen Tremayne, John Metchie III and Ja'seem Reed also battling for the end of the room. But until those decisions are made later this month, Horn is just keeping at it.
"Being in the system again, everything is slowing down for me," Horn said on Wednesday of his progress. "Learning the plays better, and just taking it one day at a time—that's what's been going better."
