Palmer's Deal Worth $49 million

The contract that Carson Palmer agreed to is a 7 year deal that includes $14 million in bonuses. Palmer received a $10.01 million signing bonus and will get another $4.01 million roster bonus in 22 months. The contract will turn into a 6 year deal if he's in for 35% of the plays in any season. Palmer can make roughly $40 million in bonuses and base salary over 6 years with escalators that could bring it to $49 million. He'll get $18.25 million in the first 3 years through bonuses and salary. <p>Man---How is this going to pan out for the #6 pick the Cards have? It could be very expensive. How in the world can you pay someone this kind of money when he hasn't even played one down in the NFL?

What a rediculous amount of money for someone who hasn't played a down yet!!

The NFL needs to set up a program like the NBA did. Players get a stipulated amount based on where they are drafted, after 3 or 4 years they can get the big bucks via free agency.

This would reduce the amount a team spends on unproven talent, allowing teams to pay more to proven vetrans rather than releasing them because of the cap.

That deal is pretty comparable to the last few #1 picks. Yes, I also believe these rookie salaries are the biggest problem in the NFL's bargaining agreement. An NBA style rookie salary would be great.

Does anyone think if the Cardinals had, or ever do have, the number one pick that we'd get a deal done BEFORE the draft?

What's truly remarkable is knowing that Lex still thinks picking a QB at #6 would cost us 25 million and yet Palmer will only make 18.25 over his first 3 years as the FIRST pick (-:

It's a risky deal, I'm going to go out on a limb and predict Palmer has a pretty good career though. I've been a bit skeptical up to now but I heard Brandt compare him to Aikman in terms of accuracy and "catchable ball" and that kind of pushed me over the top.

That actually is a really good comparison by Brandt. Palmer reminds me a lot of Aikman, and the Bengals have a solid running game, a solid group of receivers, and a good oline.

All they have to do with the rest of the draft, is draft defense and the actually might come out of the draft looking pretty good ON PAPER.

I know thats where rookie salaries are headed but sorry that is entirely way to much money for a guy that has never set foot on an NFL field!

Especially for a guy that was a one year wonder! The dude has proven nothing even in college as far as Im concerned. Many player have had one good or great year and failed to repeat it in college!

When Aikman was at UCLA Brandt said he throws the "most catchable ball I've ever seen". Brandt was of course working for Dallas at the time.

So he's pretty familiar with Troy. Aikman early on was decent runner too, but that went away quickly because he got hit so much early in his career on a bad Dallas team.

The NFL already has a slotted system for pricing rookie contracts. The thing is that there's a "QB Surcharge," where QBs get a bit of a contract upgrade because of their position. You saw that in the working out of the contract of Josh McCown last season.

Anyway, there is a slotted system of salary based on draft position. It's not absolute, but it's there.

While the numbers look huge to us, in comparison to what a vet franchse player (a la Donnie McNabb, or even guys like Ashley Ambrose or Ray Buchanan) makes, a rookie's contract is always a better deal than a vet's.
