Jun. 28—YANKTON — Palace City 14-and-under baseball finished 1-2 in three games at the Bob Tereshinski Tournament at Riverside Park for the weekend.
Palace City won 3-1 over Vermillion Red on Friday but dropped a 7-1 decision to the Rapid City Post 320 Comets and then fell 5-4 to the Yankton Lakers in the finale on Saturday. All tournament games were six innings.
Palace City topped Vermillion Red on Friday, powered by a strong outing on the mound from Deyton Puetz, who threw six innings and allowed four hits, an unearned run and struck out four batters. At the plate, Preston Maeschen and Keniel Padilla each had two hits and Puetz added an RBI as Palace City outhit Vermillion 6-4, overcoming four errors.
On Saturday against the Comets, Palace City only mustered one hit, which came from Maeschen. Carter Buschbach had the lone RBI in the fourth inning, scoring Maeschen, who took the loss on the mound and threw all six innings, allowing eight hits, seven runs (three earned) and striking out two.
Against Yankton, Palace City led 4-0 after two innings but the hosts had a walk-off victory, capped with three runs in the sixth. Maeschen had three hits and two runs scored, and Padilla had two hits and three RBIs. Puetz, Meade Schlimgen and Gavin Auch each had two hits. Padilla took the loss for Palace City, allowing 13 hits, five runs and striking out seven without a walk in 5 2/3 innings.
Palace City 14U (11-17-1) is back on the diamond for its only action of the week on Wednesday, July 1 with a noon doubleheader at Brookings.
SIOUX FALLS — Palace City 13-and-under baseball fell in three pool play games on Friday and Saturday at the Sioux Falls Invitational baseball tournament at Harmodon Park.
Palace City fell to Marshall Black (Minn.) 8-0 on Friday, and then dropped a 16-2 contest against Harrisburg MAG 16-2 and took a 7-6 loss to East Grand Forks (Minn.) on Saturday.
In Game 1 against Marshall, PCBA was outhit by a mere 6-4 margin but could not get any offense going. Tayson Schreiber had a double and Radley Maeschen, Blake Russell and Ayden Vaneverdingen each had hits. Vaneverdingen finished with the loss on the mound, allowing four hits and four earned runs in 4 1/3 innings with five strikeouts. Huntley Hillman recorded four outs in relief and had three strikeouts with two earned runs allowed.
Harrisburg scored seven runs in the first inning in the five-inning win and racked up eight extra-base hits. Palace City was held without a hit in the game but drew nine walks, including three from Vaneverdingen and Blake Russell drew two walks. Tayson Schreiber took the loss for Palace City from a pitching standpoint, allowing eight hits and 10 earned runs in 3 2/3 innings, and Boston Bates recorded four outs in relief.
Taking on East Grand Forks, Asher Kaus had two hits and two runs scored, while Radley Maeschen had a home run, two RBIs and two runs scored. Palace City drew 14 walks, including three each from Maeschen and Hillman. Russell had two stolen bases and Vaneverdingen hit a triple. Tayzen Fernau threw all six innings, allowing 10 hits, six earned runs and struck out six batters.
Palace City was slated to play Redwood Falls (Minn.) in its final game on Sunday but heavy rainfall canceled all remaining games in the tournament.
Palace City (4-24-1) will visit Brookings on Tuesday, June 30 for a 5 p.m. doubleheader at Bob Shelden FIeld.
