Sullivan's four-run seventh inning proved decisive in the host Golden Arrows' 9-6 victory over rival Linton in Wednesday's championship game of the Class 2A Sullivan high school softball sectional.

The Golden Arrows held a 5-3 lead going into the top of the seventh, and then tacked on four more runs. Without those tallies, Linton might have won, given the Miners produced three runs of their own in the bottom of the seventh.

Sullivan also had a four-run second inning, following a single run in the first, to build its early advantage.

Coach Jay Hobbs liked his team's adherence to a game plan focused on pressuring Linton's defense and limiting the Miners' "small-ball" offensive style.

"The girls executed that plan perfectly from the first pitch," he said.

"The entire team is battle tested. Eight of our last 12 games have come down to the wire and they have always come out on top. 'Proud' and 'tough' are understatements for this team."

Senior Jaylynn Hobbs helped the Golden Arrows with her arm and bat, pitching the first 2 2/3 innings, yielding three hits and one earned run before reliever Delaney Gambill took over for the final 4 1/3 innings. Coach Hobbs said Gambill's relief work "kept Linton off balance for the remainder of the game."

At the plate, Hobbs went 3 for 3 with a three-run homer in the big second inning for a 5-0 Sullivan lead. Overall, she had four runs batted in and a run scored.

Jaylynn's homer "really took the wind out of Linton's sails and it felt like we had control from that point on," her coach said.

Sullivan leadoff hitter Rigley Goodman also was 3 for 3 and scored twice. Also, Addie Fosdick doubled in a run, Hadley Newton had two hits and Hallie Howard and Kensley Wiltermood had a hit and an RBI apiece.

The home-park crowd helped, coach Hobbs said. "The atmosphere at the field that the students and fans provided really kept the momentum and energy in our favor," he noted.

Linton pitcher Keelei Brown led the Miners' hitting attack with a homer, single and three RBIs.

The Golden Arrows (18-6) will play the Forest Park Sectional champion in the Class 2A regional round Tuesday. "Our plan won't change regardless of the opponent," coach Hobbs said.

Linton finished 15-9.
