The San Diego Padres avoided being swept by the St. Louis Cardinals with a 6-1 win on Wednesday, but the team’s struggles still loom as we approach the end of June.
The Padres got on the scoreboard early with a sacrifice fly off the bat of scuffling third baseman Manny Machado in the first inning, which was followed by an RBI single by shortstop Xander Bogaerts in the fourth inning and an RBI double from right fielder Fernando Tatis Jr. in the fifth.
St. Louis scored its lone run on an Alec Burleson RBI single in the bottom of the fifth but it wasn’t nearly enough to spark a comeback for the Cards. Tatis added another RBI with a single and center fielder Jackson Merrill smashed a two-run home run to right field in the ninth inning to secure the 6-1 victory.
Reliever Bradgley Rodriguez opened the game for right-hander Griffin Canning and pitched a scoreless inning with a strikeout. Canning allowed one run on four hits and three walks with two strikeouts over 4.1 innings of work to earn his first win as a Padre.
Cardinals right-hander Kyle Leahy produced a quality start but took the loss with six innings of three-run ball on seven hits and one walk while punching out seven.
San Diego currently sits at 38-35 on its off-day, and while the team is firmly in the National League wild card race, it has been struggling over the last month and seriously need reinforcements in the batter’s box and in the starting rotation.
We are approaching the time of year where trade rumors are running rampant, and ESPN’s Kiley McDaniel and Jeff Passan put together the best fits for the top 100 trade candidates. Two of the top five players available are Minnesota Twins All-Stars and the Padres were listed as the second-best fit for both center fielder Byron Buxton and right-hander Joe Ryan.
“Buxton's loyalty to Minnesota is admirable, but at 32, he also wants to win, and the Twins aren't doing that this year,” McDaniel and Passan wrote Wednesday. “Minnesota is positioned to have another active deadline and go almost full rebuild, and if anything will change Buxton's mind, it's the Twins' timeline.”
The Twins made double-digit trades last season but kept its two best players, both of whom will garner a massive haul.
“Ryan was one of the lone survivors after the Twins' teardown last deadline -- and Minnesota was deep into discussions on deals involving him, as well. So, a move would surprise nobody, particularly considering that Ryan looks better than ever this season.”
Buxton and Ryan have both been incredible yet again this season. Buxton has 23 home runs (third) and 36 RBI while slashing .275/.336/.601 (.936 OPS) in 63 games, while Ryan is 4-3 with a 3.17 ERA, 1.00 WHIP (seventh) and 92 strikeouts (tied-13th) to just 16 walks through 15 starts (82.1 innings).
“Here are the pitchers with better K-BB% this year: Jacob Misiorowski, Paul Skenes, Jacob deGrom and Cristopher Sanchez. That's it. Calling him a front-line starter is not just Minnesota Nice.”
Ryan has a 55 percent chance of being moved according to ESPN’s finest and Buxton has a 30 percent chance. The closer we get to the Aug. 3 trade deadline, the more likely these two are dealt, and the Padres would be excellent fits given its surprisingly-awful offense and thin starting rotation.
