Twins' All-Star outfielder linked to Yankees for disappointing Giancarlo Stanton reason originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The New York Yankees will be without designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton for at least another few weeks.
It was revealed yesterday that Stanton reinjured his calf while running the bases. He's been out since April 24 with a left calf strain.
In his absence, Paul Goldschmidt has spent the majority of his time at DH for the Yankees. Goldschmidt is getting extended playing time because of Stanton and Aaron Judge's injuries.
But what if Stanton is forced to miss the rest of the season? That's probably the scenario ESPN's Jeff Passan and Kiley McDaniel had in mind when they linked two-time All-Star from the Minnesota Twins to the Yankees.
"All of this is moot, and [Byron] Buxton will drop off the list if he indicates he will use his no-trade protection to reject any potential deal," Passan and McDaniel wrote about the Gold Glove outfielder. "Buxton's loyalty to Minnesota is admirable, but at 32, he also wants to win, and the Twins aren't doing that this year. Barring a spending spree over the winter, that might not happen next year, either."
Buxton controls whether he stays or goes with the Twins due to the no-trade clause in his contract.
Now that Trent Grisham is out with a hamstring strain, he would fill in seamlessly for the Yankees in center field. But by the time the trade deadline rolls around, Grisham should have already returned from the IL.

Otherwise, Buxton fits well on New York's roster, hitting for power while stealing bases at a high rate.
Buxton's 23 homers rank third in the Majors and are three ahead of Yankees first baseman Ben Rice.
