The San Diego Padres are in search of help at this year's trade deadline, and while offense is a need, they also have a huge issue to resolve in the starting rotation.

After losing Dylan Cease in the offseason, they haven't found a replacement who could help lead the rotation. That's why it should come as little surprise that the Padres continue to be linked to some of the top pitching trade targets this year.

One pitcher of interest, the Minnesota Twins All-Star ace Joe Ryan, got an interesting trade update from ESPN's Jeff Passan and Kiley McDaniel, which revealed his better than coin flip odds of being traded this summer, with the Padres being one landing spot.

"Chance of being traded: 55%," Passan and McDaniel write. "Best fits: Cubs, Padres, A's, Diamondbacks, Braves, White Sox, Nationals, Blue Jays, Cardinals."

It's clear the Padres could use more help in the starting rotation, and Ryan might be one of the more appealing starters available this summer.

With the Twins likely to sell, Ryan might be the best pitcher available by the trade deadline if the Detroit Tigers find their footing and climb out of the hole they dug themselves into.

Ryan is a good starter, is under club control for the 2027 season, and would surely cost a bit to acquire. But A.J. Preller has a knack for the big move, and he should be able to work something out for Ryan if he's determined to land the Twins' ace.

This season, Ryan has a 3.17 ERA in 15 starts and might be on his way back to the All-Star Game for the second straight season.

The Padres would be lucky to have him in their rotation, and while it's far from a guarantee that he's going to be dealt, the 55% odds from ESPN are noteworthy for Preller and the Padres.

While the Padres themselves don't have a 55% chance to trade for Ryan, the odds the Twins trade him are at 55%, and the Padres are one of the more realistic landing spots, which is some good news for the Padres as the deadline steadily approaches.
