I think the magic number for Pacific title is 10. The magic number to clinch playoffs is 4.

I think we are up 9 games in Sacramento right now. Although we are up 10 in the loss column.

Warriors beat the Kings tonight (Thur) by 3.

BTW, Brian Skinner and Kenny Thomas looked very good. This is beginning to look like the Kings made a very good trade.

Kenny Thomas hasn't looked all that great, but Skinner definitely has been pretty impressive. With all the problems with Webber in Philly, it looks like the Kings may have done the right thing. But I'm not sure they improved their chances (at least this year) with the trade.

The thinking here in Sacramento is it was primarily done was because it would be easy to trade the guys they don't want. They'll be active this off-season.

Ok I am I missing something here?

There are 82 games in a year.

The Suns have played 65 have 17 games left

The Kings have played 68 have 14 games left

The Kings are 9.5 game behind the Suns. So that leaves only 2 wins by the Suns or Kings losses will end the Pacific Race. I guess it could be 3 if you rounded up instead of down on the 1/2 game.

The real magic number is what? 5 or 6 now?

I've been updating it in the "60 win watch" thread. It's currently at seven.

If you can explain how you're getting 2 or 3 from the above numbers, maybe someone can figure out what you're doing wrong.

Wouldn't it be 9 from 14 for 5?

EDIT:
OK counting the games from last Thursday when we agreed it was 10 it is now 7 (like elindholm said).

What is the formula for this?

I take the # games the Kings have left 14 - the games behind 9.5 = 4.5 - the more games PHX has left over the Kings 3 = 1.5 or 2. Or am I way off here?

Phoenix having more games would increase the number.

If you run out the numbers assuming that Phoenix loses every game and Sac wins every game then Phoenix would finish 6 games behind.

The "magic number" would be 1 number higher for Phoenix to finish 1 game ahead.

For those interested in such things, the formula is

(((total # of games left for the two teams) - (2 x current game lead)) / 2 ) + 1

So, in the Suns-Kings case, it's

(((17 + 14) - (2 x 9.5)) / 2 ) + 1

= ((31 - 19) / 2 ) + 1

= 12/2 + 1

= 7

Could be worse. We could be Laker fans trying to figure out how to get INTO the playoffs....

magic number = 0
suns pac champs :)

magic number to clinch 2 seed: 6

get this, miami's magic number for the one seed in the east: 1 :0

then shaq chills out for a month to get ready for the playoffs, rounds into shape in the 1st round destroying whatever crap 8 seed they got on him, then works on getting serious against wash. or chi. in preparation for the detroit showdown. this should work out well for him :)

I literally have tears in my eyes.

Of course, that might be because I'm drunk from celebrating my 30th birthday tonight, but hey... :)
