LOS ANGELES --
The leader of a church group that had 4,000 members in attendance at Dodger Stadium died Thursday of an apparent heart attack after collapsing on the field during batting practice.
The man, identified by the Dodgers as Don Hawkins, was taken by a Los Angeles Fire Department ambulance to Good Samaritan hospital at 6:35 p.m. PT. He collapsed while the Padres were taking batting practice. Medical staff performed CPR on Hawkins on the field.
Hawkins' wife and grandson were on hand as part of Mormon Community Night, an annual event. Two people who rode in the ambulance to the hospital with Hawkins were to throw out the first pitch Thursday, the Dodgers said.
The Dodgers asked over the speaker system before the game that fans keep Hawkins in their thoughts.
