Webb is barely over half way to Hershiser's record of 59 consecutive scoreless innings.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that record approaches DiMaggio's 56 game hitting streak

Here's hoping Webby can keep this thing going

Hershiser was unstoppable that year. One of the most dominating years for a pitcher in my memory. He was just as dominant in the post-season with 2 CG victories in the World Series (I was there for his game 2 win over the A's).

I watched every inning of Hershiser's run that year and I was certain it was a record that would never be broken. It's really a team record. It requires the pitcher to keep it in the park and his teammates to make the everyday plays ... and the occasional pitcher's pitch on a full count or diving stab of a line drive.

It also requires an umpire or two or ten to make a questionable call. :)

Melvin said that he let Webb pitch complete games in his last two (shutout) starts because the schedule alllowed him an extra day off both times.

33 innings without a run given up and the only way Brandon can hope to finish a game is if the schedule dictates it?

Bob Melvin has luck-for-brains. I hope it doesn't catch up with him.

It couldn't possibly be that he doesn't want to burn out the arm of the ace of a first place team who has never had to pitch into October and has already pitched more innings than anybody else in the NL.

Without Brandon Webb, this team is done. That isn't worth keeping a watchful eye on?

September 28In his last start of the regular season‚ Orel Hershiser pitches 10 shutout innings to extend his consecutive-scoreless-inning streak to 59‚ breaking Dodger Don Drysdale's ML record by one. San Diego's Andy Hawkins also pitches 10 shutout innings and the Padres eventually win 2-1 on Mark Parent's home run in the bottom of the 16th. Hershiser's streak gets some help when umpire Paul Runge makes an interference call at 2B on a run-scoring double play. Hershiser ends the month with a 5-0 record and an ERA of 0.00. His streak started on August 30th with 4 shutout innings against Montreal.

Yes, I suppose so.

I became a baseball fan when starting pitchers were expected to go nine innings every game. Transportation and accomodations were less sophisticated. Technology was not as advanced. And salaries were a hell of a lot less than today's prima donnas.

There were no 7th, 8th and 9th inning specialists. And good ERA's were about a run under what they are today.

Of course, batters didn't use steroids. Oh well.

He is now 2 games away from the record. Too bad that is scheduled for a game in San Diego. I would love to see that in person. Everyone better get out there for Webby's next start to support him!

Brandon Webb is now treading ground where few pitchers in the history of the game ever have been. The odds are still against him but it sure has been fun watching him pitch. Wednesday's game should be the hottest ticket in town and there should not be an empty seat at Chase for Wednesday's game. Keep up the good work D-Backs defense and good luck Brandon.

Brandon Webb is doing the unthinkable. He is without a doubt the best pitcher in baseball right now. I am so glad we are not the Cubs signing Zambrano for so much right now because without the Webb extention, he be making in the neighborhood of about 12 million to 15 right now. If he keeps this confidence, Brandon Webb will be a repeat Cy Young offender...
