It was a successful week in Southern California for the Oregon Ducks, who swept UC San Diego in a two-game midweek series before taking two-of-three on the weekend from UC Santa Barbara. Some nice performances on the road have the Ducks moving up in the national rankings, and some key contributors are getting some well-deserved recognition.
To kick off the road trip, the Ducks shut out UC San Diego 6-0 on Tuesday, thanks to a great pitching performance. The Ducks had several strong showings on the mound throughout the trip, but Miles Gosztola might have been the very best. He earned Big Ten Pitcher of the Week honors for his work against UC San Diego.
Gosztola tossed seven shutout innings against the Tritons and carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning. The junior left-hander faced the minimum for the first 7 ⅔ innings before allowing a base hit to break up the no-hitter. He only issued one walk, which came in the sixth inning but was erased by an inning-ending double play.
The Gonzaga transfer matched a career-high with eight strikeouts in the win. He was able to get ahead of the Tritons at the plate by throwing first-pitch strikes to 17 of the 22 batters he faced. He set the tone for the Ducks' pitching staff for the week, which combined to toss three shutouts on the road trip.
Gosztola is the first Duck to win Big Ten Pitcher of the Week since left-hander Grayson Grinsell won it last May after throwing seven shutout innings on the road against Iowa in the last series of the regular season.
Gosztola is not, however, the first Duck to take Big Ten honors this season. Designated hitter Dominic Hellman was awarded Player of the Week last week when he hit four home runs in a series against Northwestern. Right fielder Angel Laya has also been named Freshman of the Week twice this season.
The Ducks are headed back to Eugene for one game against Portland on Tuesday before hitting the road again for a weekend series at Michigan. Gosztola could be in line to make his third start for the Ducks against the Pilots and become the regular midweek starter.
