One Knox is back atop the USL League One standings after a gritty 2-1 win over Fort Wayne FC at Covenant Health Park.
The July 15 match featured cards from the opening kick, including a pair of red cards, along with a deflected game-winning goal that kept Knoxville's eight-match unbeaten streak alive.
Abel Caputo used a deflected volley kick in the 81st minute to push Knoxville to a win after conceding the equalizer in the 73rd minute.
Fort Wayne FC's Javier Armas received a red card off the opening kickoff after striking One Knox's Denis Krioutchenkov in the upper body. Krioutchenkov knocked down Armas, who threw his legs in the direction of the Knoxville's attacker as he fell to the ground.
The referee presented Krioutchenkov a yellow card and followed it with a red card to Armas in the second minute of the match. Krioutchenkov remained in the game after an injury timeout but picked up his second yellow card during added time in the first half.
Both teams played with 10 men the entire second half, which started with One Knox defender Scott McLeod finding the back of the net. He scored off the feed from a corner kick, putting Knoxville ahead 1-0.
Fort Wayne tallied the equalizer in the 73rd minute from the foot of Kabiru Gafar, but Caputo's lucky strike gave Knoxville the win - and three points - to move to the top of the league standings.
"I think that's who we are," Caputo said. "We're a gritty team. I think we can do it all. We can do it the pretty way. We can do it in the ugly way. And I think those are qualities. That's what makes us good. It means we can dig games out of nowhere."

"It was like, 'Oh, finally,'" Caputo said. "I don't usually get that many chances, but I'm glad I was able to get a goal. I'm glad I was able to help the team win, and that's all I'm here to do."
One Knox will remain at home for another match against AV Alta FC on Saturday, July 18. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

- Chaos from the kick: An injury timeout forced the referee to wait until the second minute to present a red card. The incident between Krioutchenkov and Armas happened three seconds into the match.
- First-timers: Caputo's goal was the first of his two-year career with One Knox, while McLeod's 48th-minute goal was the first of his USL regular season career. "Scott's not played a lot of soccer," Fuller said. "He stepped in and played very well, and I'm really pleased we finally scored on a set piece − put the goalkeeper under a lot of pressure and scored a very good goal."
- Magical deflections: One Knox continues to have unique goals at Covenant Health Park. In the last home match June 13, Krioutchenkov scored on a unique goaltender deflection. Caputo continued with his lucky strike in the 81st minute. "I think one time is lucky, two times is maybe lucky again," Caputo said. "And once you do it three, four, five times, that's just because you're doing things right. ... And when you put yourself in the right positions, sometimes luck is in your favor."
