Breezy Johnson has had a busy Milan-Cortina Winter Olympic Games. The American alpine ski racer won a gold medal in the women’s downhill earlier this week, but that wasn’t the only highlight of her week.
Despite crashing in the super-G on Thursday morning, Johnson’s boyfriend surprised her at the finish line. Connor Watkins got on one knee at the base of the super-G event. He gave her a ring with a piece of wood that read “Honestly, who are we to fight the alchemy?” according to NBC.
The piece of wood read the lyrics of Taylor Swift’s “The Alchemy” song, from her “The Tortured Poets Department” album. Johnson has experienced all kinds of emotions during her tenure in Italy. He went from being atop of her sport, to crashing, to getting engaged. In the middle of that, she starred in a bizarre moment involving her medal.
After winning the gold medal on Sunday, Breezy Johnson experienced a bizarre moment. Just like many other athletes, she suffered a malfunction with her medal. As she jumped up and down to celebrate her win, her gold medal came off its ribbon.
“It’s definitely heavy. Heavier than I expected,” Johnson said. “I think that’s maybe why it broke.”
As she completed her round of interviews, Johnson put the medal in her pocket. The questions about the medals’ malfunctions continued. According to The Guardian, the medal’s cord is responsible for these issues. It is fitted with a “breakaway mechanism required by law.”
The system releases automatically if pulled with force, which helps prevent the wearer from being choked. It still needs some fixes, as it led to problems among athletes.
