Johnson and Watkins met on the dating app Bumble around the summer of 2023, according to The Athletic. Per the outlet, he didn't know she was an Olympic ski racer, but was a little intimidated when he figured it out about 10 minutes into their first date.
The pair have kept their relationship mostly private over the years. But, after Johnson shared that she is bisexual in a November 2022 Instagram post, she told Team USA in December 2022 that she wanted to keep the focus on her athletics rather than her personal life.
"I’m not hiding or worried about what people are going to ask me in the finish about my boyfriend or what not, but I did get it out there because I wanted to get back to focusing on skiing," Johnson said. "I would hope people credit my work ethic and my results, and not some announcement."

Watkins proposed to Johnson at the finish line of her final race of the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics on Feb. 12. Just a few minutes prior, she unfortunately crashed and couldn't finish the race.
"You’ve worked so hard and achieved so much, and yet you still find the time to love me, to make me feel special, and most importantly, you help me love myself," Watkins said to Johnson in a clip shared by Today. "There’s only one way I want to spend the rest of my life, and that’s by your side. I love you Breezy. Will you marry me?"
He then told NBC that he had planned the moment for a year, but said it had "gone above and beyond our wildest imagination."
The proposal also didn't come as that much of a surprise for Johnson, who told the outlet that she "may have told him that I just always kind of had the dream of getting engaged at the Olympics." Watkins had been planning the proposal for about a year, per The Athletic.
Alongside the ring, Watkins gave the Olympian a piece of wood etched with lyrics from Taylor Swift's "The Alchemy."
"Honestly, who are we to fight the alchemy," the engraving read.

Following the proposal, Watkins said on Today that he had a "plan B" for the special moment in case Johnson crashed badly during the race. Although she did crash, the athlete could ski down the mountain, and Watkins was able to stick to his original plan.
Watkins said that he had been "really nervous," noting that he feels that way "every time she goes down the hill."
"I wanted her to do well, but I just wanted her to be safe, too," he said. "She got up after the crash and was good, and that was a sign of relief. And then my heart started racing again because I knew I was about to go and get down on my own knee and propose."
Watkins went on to say that "the mountains don’t always cooperate with what you’re planning," so he made sure to have a backup plan.
"Luckily, she got up and was fine, and we could stick with plan A," he said. "But definitely, in the case where she wasn’t receptive of the proposal, I had a backup plan just in case."https://people-app.onelink.me/HNIa/kz7l4cuf
