The Oklahoma Sooners have made a lot of history in recent years. They broke the record for consecutive wins and set a new standard for excellence, becoming the first team to win four-straight national championships. From an individual standpoint, Jocelyn Alo broke the all-time home run record. Now, more history is taking place in Norman as freshman Kendall Wells puts together an incredible season for the Sooners.
Wells was named D1Softball National Player of the Week and SEC Player of the Week after tying the single-season freshman home run record and breaking the single-season SEC home run record. Oklahoma went 4-0 last week, and Wells was excellent.
She hit four home runs last week, with one in each game to give her 30 on the season. Wells also hit .556 with nine runs scored, nine RBIs, and walked six times to lead the Sooners. She's now seven home runs away from tying the single-season home run record set in 1995 by Arizona's Laura Espinoza.
This season, Wells is hitting .397 with 30 home runs and 66 RBIs. She has a 1.165 slugging percentage and an on-base percentage of .493. This is the second D1Softball National Player of the Week award for Wells and her first SEC Player of the Week honor.
Oklahoma will travel to Austin this week to take on the No. 4 Texas Longhorns. The Sooners are currently two games up on the Longhorns and the Alabama Crimson Tide in the SEC standings.
