AUSTIN, TX — It had been a rough weekend for Kendall Wells after her first six plate appearances.
In her seventh, she made history.
Wells' three-run homer in the fifth inning Saturday gave OU a 4-2 lead at Texas and set a new NCAA Division I softball record for home runs by a true freshman at 31.
Last weekend against Kentucky, Wells hit her 30th home run of the season, which came in her 40th career game and tied Hawaii's Kelly Majam — as well as former Sooner greats Jocelyn Alo and Lauren Chamberlain — for the most home runs by a freshman.
Wells now sits alone at the top of the freshman home run list.
Arizona's Lauren Espinoza holds the overall single-season record with 37 home runs in 1995.
