May 29—Solid efforts were turned back at crunch time as the OFA Girls Lacrosse and Softball team were turned back in their respective semi-final games on Wednesday.
The second seeded Lady Laxers where denied by third seeded Massena 11-10 in the Section 10 Class C semi-finals and the Class B Softball semis top seeded Gouverneur came from behind and pulled away to an 8-3 victory. Massena will play the winner of semi-final game between Potsdam and Malone which was postposed on Wednesday and Gouverneur will face Canton in Saturday's Championship game at St. Lawrence University at 10 a.m.
Second seeded Canton downed St. Lawrence Central in its semi-final contest.
GIRLS LAX
The Raiders prevailed in a contest which changed dramatically in the fourth quarter. For the first three quarters the teams literally traded goals to finish in a 10-10 tie.
The fourth quarter saw Massena gain a decided edge possession but turned back by four close range savess by OFA goaltender Quinn Duprey who finished with 13 saves. The Raiders finally broke the tie while playing a man-down on penalty shot by Hailey LaShomb with 2:20 to play.
The Devils played much of the game;s climax on the power play but were unable to get a good and the Raiders finally ran out the clock after clearing the ball out of the attack zone.
"Its hard to explain but we dikd a good job avoiding penalties and yellow card but couldn't get good shots when we a player up," said OFA Coach Jake Jeneault.
"Quinn Duprey kept us in the game in the fourth quarter with some great saves.
The game-winner gave Hailey LaShomb three goals and two assists at the head of the Massena offense which also included four goals from JC Jabout, three assists from Keara Frost, two goals from Cali Thompson, one goal and one assists from Sami Arner and single goals from Lilly fregoe and Jordyn Jabout.
Goaltender Hannah Roundpoint finished with four saves.
Brooke Irvine delivered four goals and one assist to lead the OFA offense. Mia Jeneault scored two goals with two assists and Avery LaPage tallied two goals with one assist. Ellen Ramsdell added one goal and one assist and Maddy Costello netted a single goal.
SOFTBALL
The Blue Devils took a 3-2 with emphasis when Carlee Thompson belted a two-run homerun. The Wildcats answered with six runs to claim a well-earned third win of the season over the Blue Devils.
Canton 12 — SLC 1: Tessa Alguire struck out 11 and stroked three singles at the plate for Canton which also received a homerun and a single from Layla Clifford. Elise Harris and emma Bradish-Hayes and a double from Jenna Larrabee. Hope McDonald tripled for SLC, and AJ Sweet and Maddyson Bernard singled twicel
