New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani found a playful way to pull San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama into the New York Knicks’ NBA Finals fever.
The Knicks are in the middle of a Finals series that has taken over New York, so the mayor’s office leaning into the moment made perfect sense. Mamdani did not frame it as trash talk, but the timing of his invitation made the joke impossible to miss.
Wembanyama is the player New York most needs occupied, distracted, or at least briefly dragged toward civic duty. The invite worked because it mixed government business with the kind of fan logic that thrives during a championship series.

Zohran Mamdani tries to pull Victor Wembanyama from New York Knicks clash
Zohran Mamdani invited Victor Wembanyama to a June 10 government hearing, with the timing creating an obvious Knicks-Spurs subplot before Game 4.
“I’m pleased to invite Wemby to our second Commission on Government Efficiency hearing on Wednesday June 10th 5-8pm, where we’ll be asking the public for their thoughts on how government can run better. Would love to have you there for the whole time!” Mamdani tweeted.
The invitation was funny because it sounded official while landing like a fan tactic. Mamdani was asking Wembanyama to spend three hours at a public hearing on the same night the Spurs are scheduled to play a Finals game.
No one needed to believe Wembanyama would actually trade Game 4 preparation for a city government meeting. The point was that New York’s mayor found a clever way to join the local effort to make the Spurs star’s week a little less comfortable.
Zohran Mamdani knows Victor Wembanyama’s absence would help New York Knicks
Game 4 of the NBA Finals is scheduled for Wednesday, June 10, at 8:30 p.m. ET, with every game in the series listed for that start time. Mamdani’s hearing is scheduled from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., leaving only a tiny window before tipoff.
The timing carried the joke. If Wembanyama actually stayed for the full hearing, the Spurs would be asking their franchise player to sprint from public comment to Finals basketball with almost no room to reset.
Mamdani being the mayor of New York made the bit work even better. His city is backing the Knicks, and any harmless civic invitation that even jokingly tilts the night toward the home team fits the mood of the series.
The Spurs will not lose Wembanyama to a government efficiency hearing, but the joke still did its job. Mamdani turned a routine public event into a Knicks-friendly punchline without needing to say directly that New York would love Wembanyama unavailable for Game 4.
