Zohran Mamdani is ready for Knicks Finals fever at Madison Square Garden, but New York’s mayor made it clear that Donald Trump is not part of his game-night plan.
The Knicks are giving New York its first NBA Finals stage since 1999, so every celebrity, politician and public figure now wants a piece of the Garden spotlight.
Mamdani’s answer worked because it did not overreach. He left Trump’s choice alone, while drawing a clean line around his own Knicks experience.

Zohran Mamdani Trump answer fits Knicks Finals moment
As TMZ showed, Mamdani was asked about the idea of attending a Knicks NBA Finals game with Trump and he kept the separation obvious.
“If the president went to a game, I’d let him, that’s his decision to make. If I go to the game, I’ll be doing so separately.”
That is not a dramatic quote, but it tells the story. Mamdani did not try to ban Trump from the building or turn the answer into a full political speech.
He simply made clear that sharing the same arena is different from sharing the same night. In New York, especially during a Knicks Finals run, that distinction lands.
Knicks Finals spotlight makes every seat political
The reason this became a question is obvious. Madison Square Garden is not just a basketball venue when the Knicks are this good.
It is a cultural stage, and Trump showing up would become its own event inside the event. Mamdani understood that without needing to predict the crowd.
He reportedly said New Yorkers are too unpredictable to forecast how Trump would be received. That was the smart answer, because the Garden can cheer, boo and turn chaotic in the same quarter.
Mamdani has also built his own Knicks fan credibility during this run. He attended Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Finals from the upper levels after paying for his own ticket.
New York Knicks bring Finals pressure to MSG
The Knicks will open the NBA Finals on the road because Oklahoma City and San Antonio both finished with better regular-season records.
New York went 53-29, while the Thunder went 64-18 and the Spurs went 62-20. That means the first Madison Square Garden Finals game is scheduled for June 8.
The opponent is still being decided, with Thunder-Spurs going to Game 7 after San Antonio’s 118-91 win in Game 6.
That only adds to the anticipation. By the time the Finals reach Manhattan, Mamdani, Trump and everyone else will be walking into the loudest Knicks environment in decades.
