NEW YORK — David Stearns wants there to be some runway before making any major roster decisions about the Mets with about six weeks until Major League Baseball's trade deadline.

The problem is that the Mets continue to sink in the National League standings.

They enter Tuesday night with a 34-43 record as they welcome the Cubs (40-37) for the first of four games at 7:10 p.m. at Citi Field. The Mets are six games back of the Cubs, Padres and Nationals, which are in a three-way tie for the final NL Wild Card spot.

"The cutoff is Aug. 3. The cutoff is the deadline. Clearly you have to have a strategic direction at that point," Stearns said. "We can prepare along parallel paths as we go through this, and we know we have to play better that what we played right now, and we're going to give this team a chance to do that."

The current struggles for the Mets has been the dependability of the starting rotation to pitch deep into games and effectively. But different segments have underperformed at various points of the season, with the offense also shouldering some blame in the early going.

The Mets need Kodai Senga and some of their other starters, like David Peterson and Freddy Peralta, to pitch to their potential if they hope to make up ground. Senga will be making his second start back from lumbar spine inflammation on Tuesday night. The right-hander is 0-5 with a 9.00 ERA this season, giving up four earned runs in four innings last time out.

"I do think in terms of our rotation, it's a turn-by-turn evaluations and we do need to see production there," Stearns said. "We need to figure out a way to get ourselves later into games in competitive positions and so it is called a turn-by-turn evaluation of where we're going to go, start to start."

Edward Cabrera will be starting Tuesday's game for the Cubs. The 28-year-old right-hander is 4-4 with a 5.21 ERA in 13 starts this season. He allowed five earned runs on three hits and two walks over 4⅓ innings in his most recent start against the Rockies.
