Denver Nuggets rookie Tamar Bates will miss at least 12 weeks after undergoing surgery on Monday to repair a left foot fracture, the team announced.
Bates, signed to a two-way contract, has spent much of the season in the G League with the Grand Rapids Gold, averaging 19.5 points, 4.2 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1.6 steals on 43.3% shooting from 3-point range in 13 appearances.
The undrafted guard out of Missouri last played with the Gold on Friday in the G League Winter Showcase, recording 18 points, three rebounds and two steals in 33 minutes in a win over the Greensboro Swarm. He did not play in their last game on Sunday.
Bates averaged 13.5 points, 2.6 rebounds, 1.3 steals and one assist on 39.7% shooting from 3-point range last season as a senior. He led the country in free-throw percentage (94.6) and ranked second in the SEC in true-shooting percentage (64.3).
The 22-year-old was highly touted because of his shooting, physicality in the backcourt and length. He measured in with a 6-foot, 10 3/4-inch wingspan at the draft combine in May, emerging as one of the top on-court performers in the event.
Bates is one of three players signed to a two-way contract by the team, along with Curtis Jones and Spencer Jones. He has yet to appear in a game with the Nuggets.
