Norway's Sander Eitrem set an Olympic record on his way to claiming men's 5,000 metres speed skating gold at the Milano/Cortina Winter Games on Sunday.

Eitrem clocked 6 minutes 03.95 seconds, which was not enough to break his own world record of 5:58.52, but was just perfect to give him his first Olympic medal.

The world champion in the discipline finished 2.53 seconds ahead of silver medallist Metodej Jilek of the Czech Republic. Bronze went to Italy's Riccardo Lorello, who celebrated in front of the home fans.

The women's 5,000m is on Thursday.
