We’re getting closer to the debut of the new Ryan Field for the Northwestern football program.
The first game inside the new stadium will be on Oct. 2 against Penn State, which will be Northwestern’s fourth game of the 2026 college football season.
Media members toured the new stadium on Tuesday and noticed an interesting wrinkle about the student section. There are no seats in the student section because the school wants the students standing for the entire game.

Northwestern wants a hostile environment for each home game, and it could get it with this cool change.
The 2026 season will be David Braun’s fourth season as head coach, and he has already led the program to two bowl games. He led the Wildcats to an 8-5 finish with a win in the Las Vegas Bowl in his first season (2023) before leading them to a 7-6 finish and a win in the GameAbove Sports Bowl this past season.
He’s done a great job since taking over the team from Pat Fitzgerald. This was a one-win team following the 2022 season, and the Wildcats have already won 19 games since then.
The Wildcats will open the 2026 college football season on Sept. 5 against the South Dakota State Jackrabbits before playing the Colorado Buffaloes on Sept. 19. Their first Big Ten game will be on the road against the Indiana Hoosiers on Sept. 25 before playing their first game inside the new Ryan Field on Oct. 2.
Kickoff for the season opener between the Wildcats and Jackrabbits will be at 8 p.m. ET on the Big Ten Network.
