Starting pitchers set the tone for a short baseball playoff series, but it's the relief pitchers who are left with the task of finishing the job and getting the highest-leverage outs on the field. North Carolina is preparing for its super regional series against USC. The Tar Heels have an emerging reliever who could become the key to the series. Tar Heels Wire has more:
"During Sunday's Regional Final, the Diamond Heels got nearly four perfect innings from Jackson Rose on the mound. A freshman from Woodstock (Ga.), Rose only walked one Pirate across four frames, while striking out four more. In past NCAA Tournaments, Forbes has a tendency to leave pitchers in for too long. UNC has pitching depth on its 2026 roster, with Rose proving that Sunday. Whether Rose shows out against vs. USC, Rom Kellis enjoys another big game at the dish or Cooper Nicholson returns to his form vs. VCU, non-traditional stars stepping up for UNC will bring it back to Omaha."
USC had its share of unlikely heroes emerge in the College Station Regional. The Trojans needed pitchers other than Mason Edwards to step up. North Carolina got those kinds of performances in its own regional victory. Whether UNC gets past USC could depend on Jackson Rose being the game-changing reliever the Tar Heels want him to be.
USC has to have a game plan to defuse Carolina's relievers and take the bloom off the Rose.
