With the only team seeded ahead of North Carolina now one loss from elimination, the road to a national title at the College World Series could be clear for the No. 4 Tar Heels.

The No. 5 seed Tar Heels (52-12-1) are now the betting favorite to win the national championship after Georgia (52-13), the No. 3 seed and No. 3-ranked team, lost 4-3 on Monday night against SEC rival Oklahoma (40-22).

After beating No. 16 national seed West Virginia 5-2 on Sunday night and with Georgia’s loss, the Tar Heels moved from having the second-best title odds at plus-190 to the favorite at minus-115, with Oklahoma now second at plus-275. The Bulldogs’ defeat dropped them from favorite at plus-160 to the third choice at plus-700..

Pearratings.com gives Carolina by far the best chance to reach the CWS finals — 85.3 percent, compared with 61.9 percent for Oklahoma — and to win the national championship, at 48.5 percent compared with 23.7 percent for the Sooners.

None of that guarantees an easy path for Carolina, which still must rely on elite defense and pitching, plus timely hitting, to stay unbeaten in Omaha at 2-0.

One win from a CWS finals berth, coach Scott Forbes’ Tar Heels will play at 2:07 p.m. on Wednesday against West Virginia. Even if UNC drops that game, it could still advance with a victory in what would be the deciding Bracket 1 game Thursday at either 2:07 p.m. or 7:07 p.m.

In Bracket 2, Georgia faces Texas (46-14), the No. 6 seed and No. 6-ranked team, in a 7:07 p.m. Tuesday elimination game. Oklahoma will meet the winner at 7:07 p.m. Wednesday, one win from the CWS final. If the Sooners lose, a deciding Bracket 2 game would be played Thursday at 2:07 p.m. or 7:07 p.m.

If there is only one game Thursday, it will be played at 7:07 p.m., and all games will air on ESPN.
