The wait finally ended Saturday for Marlin Fever, a North Carolina boat that caught a record-breaking fish Tuesday in the Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament in Morehead City, North Carolina.

The 68th annual tournament’s sixth and final day ended Saturday with Marlin Fever still atop the leaderboard and poised to collect a record estimated of $6.5 million for its 919.9-pound blue marlin.

The previous tournament record was a 914-pound blue marlin caught in 2019.

Fender Bender, a boat out of Manteo, North Carolina, finished second in the blue marlin category with a 644.1-pound catch.

On Saturday, 255 of the event’s 278 registered boats hit the water to fish. But none topped Marlin Fever, based in Wilson County, North Carolina, and angler Connor Daniels.

Marlin Fever, captained by Cameron Guthrie, already had earned $871,250 for reeling in the tournament’s first blue marlin weighing more than 500 pounds, and the tournament this week estimated the boat’s overall total prize winnings would be more than $6.5 million.

The total purse is estimated at more than $9 million — also a tournament record.
