The first massive blue marlin finally arrived at the Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament scales on Friday night after nearly a week of waiting.
But the 653.7-pound behemoth reeled in by Southern Grace, a boat from Ocean, North Carolina, was disqualified under the tournament’s mutilation rule after review and consultation with marine biologists, according to a Big Rock press release.
That leaves the tournament’s Level V Fabulous Fisherman’s prize worth $807,500 for the first 500-pound marlin up for grabs heading into Saturday’s final day of fishing.
The leader atop the blue marlin division remains Lizzie Montague, who reeled in a 449.7-pounder aboard BANKWALKER on Wednesday. She’s aiming to become the first female angler to win the tournament’s marquee division since Gigi Wagoner in 2005.
In the dolphin winner-take-all category, SEA WISH continues to lead with a 47.2-pound catch that will be worth $548,250.
The tournament, based in Morehead City, North Carolina, has a total purse of more than $6 million and features 272 registered boats. Crews are permitted to fish four of the event’s six days, and most are expected to fish Saturday for the final day after many took lay days early this week because of inclement weather. Scales close at 7 p.m. Saturday.
