Veteran center Tyler Biadasz, a native of Wisconsin and once a Pro Bowler, will not be joining the Green Bay Packers or Chicago Bears in the NFC North. According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, Biadasz is signing a three-year, $30 million deal with the Los Angeles Chargers -- marking the first big domino to fall in the NFL's center market this offseason.
The Packers, who have a big question mark at center, and the Bears, who lost starting center Drew Dalman to retirement, both made sense for Biadasz, who played collegiately at Wisconsin and was a Pro Bowler for the Dallas Cowboys in 2021. The Bears reportedly had or wanted Biadasz in for a visit, so there was legitimate interest.
But the two long-time rivals will have to pivot at center.
If at all interested in Biadasz, the Packers likely would have balked at a three-year deal for the 28-year-old center. This is third contract territory for Biadasz, and the Packers are generally very selective when handing out third deals to aging players. Reliable and durable and playing a position of obvious need, Biadasz would have checked a lot of boxes for the Packers, who need to get a lot better along the offensive line in 2026. But the Chargers, who have ample cap space, were in a far better negotiating situation financially than the Packers, who just had to do a max restructure on Xavier McKinney's deal to become cap compliant.
Biadasz, who was due just over $8 million in 2026, appears to be getting a decent pay bump with the Chargers.
In free agency, the biggest prize at center is Tyler Linderbaum, one of the top players available. It's possible the Bears have him circled as the go-to target in free agency. Barring a few big transactions, the Packers are probably not in a position to be in the Linderbaum sweepstakes. Other free agent options include Connor McGovern and Cade Mays.
The need, however, is clear. Elgton Jenkins is a release or trade candidate entering the final year of his deal, and Sean Rhyan is an unrestricted free agent. The Packers could lose both players by next week. Brian Gutekunst needs to nail down a long-term plan at center this offseason, whether via the veteran market or the draft (or a combination of the two). The Biadasz option is now off the table.
