Two other Cyclones scored in double figures, as Milan Momcilovic scored 20 and Ames native Tamin Lipsey scored 13 points.
Texas Tech opened the game on a 4-0 run, which included the first of Donovan Atwell’s six 3-point baskets, before Jefferson responded with a 5-0 run by himself. Momcilovic gave the Cyclones their second of five leads on the game with a 3-point basket which pushed Iowa State ahead by two, the largest margin of advantage they’d record all day. Later, a jumper by Jefferson gave the Cyclones their final lead (14-13) with 12:15 remaining in the first half. Over the next 5:55 of the game, the Red Raiders went on a 20-2 run.
A tip dunk by Blake Buchanan whittled the Texas Tech lead down to a dozen with 3:48 remaining in the first half. Including the aforementioned basket, Buchanan scored six of the Cyclones eight points of the half, with the final basket coming off a second chance tip-in layup with nine tenths of a second remaining.
