The LSU Tigers' undefeated season is over as the McNeese St. Cowboys came into town and picked up a 7-6 win over Jay Johnson's squad.
The Tigers now fall to 9-1 on the season. This was the best start of the Johnson era, so there's no real reason to worry too much about this loss. Midweek losses happen; it's the spirit of the sport and the reason that LSU didn't overtake the UCLA Bruins in the Top-25 after their loss.
It was a bullpen day for the Tigers, who started freshman righty Marco Paz. Paz was one of the most highly anticipated incoming freshmen in the country, but his inexperience has stood out early on in his career.
The Carrollton, Texas native's ERA is up to 12.27 on the year after getting tagged for four runs off just one hit in 1.2 innings of work. He walked two batters and hit another, but did at least have two strikeouts to hang his hat on.
That second-inning meltdown ended up being the difference in this game as LSU never really recovered. They were pretty inconsistent on both sides of the ball.
The best reliever on the day, and one of the best on the season, was redshirt sophomore Deven Sheerin. He transferred to LSU and missed last year with injury. He's back now and with a vengeance.
He pitches with extreme aggression and confidence. His fastball hits the upper-90s and he has a slider he can work with as well. He's up to five innings on the season now and has allowed no hits with two walks and 10 strikeouts.
The only real offensive standouts in this game were Zach Yorke and John Pearson, who both hit home runs. Pearson was the only Tigers player and one of the only two players in the whole game who had more than one hit.
LSU will return to the diamond this Friday against the Dartmouth Big Green at 6:30 pm CT. They have games against them and the Northeastern Huskies this weekend at Alex Box Stadium.
