In a night where the LSU Tigers needed their pitching to show up more than ever, their arms battled adversity and delivered in a 6-2 win over the Oklahoma Sooners in the opening round of the SEC Tournament.

If the Tigers have any hope of making the NCAA tourney, they must go through this whole single elimination bracket to win the conference. They've had a massively disappointing season, but they looked like themselves on Tuesday night.

It all started with a shock right before the game when projected starter and staff ace William Schmidt told Jay Johnson that he couldn't pitch. It appears to have been back spasms that popped up and kept him off the mound.

With just about 30 minutes before the game, Grant Fontenot learned that he would start. That is not an easy mental adjustment to make, especially someone who has had an up-and-down year.

Fontenot answered the call and put up a fairly clean 2.1 innings of work with three hits, a walk, a strikeout and a run allowed. It wasn't perfect, but it was as good as the team could have hoped to get in the situation.

Gavin Guidry has had a tumultuous season, but has been known to show up in big moments throughout his career. He delivered one of his best performances of the season. He went 3.1, allowing two hits and one unearned run while striking out six. He got into a little trouble and left the bases loaded. Deven Sheerin stepped up and got out of the moment, then went on to close the game out in electric fashion.

Sheerin throws hard and has always been a fiery cat, but was in rare form in this game. He went 3.1 innings with just one hit, no walks and six strikeouts. He was in the heads of the Sooners' hitters and never let up. Every out came with an outburst of emotion (which were picked up on the hot mic). At one point, the umpire had to confront him about it.

In a year where LSU's pitching had been the worst in the SEC, they got some major performances out of veteran players to keep their season alive.

Meanwhile, they got some "more of the same" performances from their key offensive contributors. Derek Curiel went 3-for-6 with a pair of doubles and an RBI. Cade Arrambide had a late two-out hit to set up a two-run shot by Steven Milam.

The only worrisome part of this game is that Omar Serna, who scored two runs, got injured when he slid into home. He left immediately and came back with a wrapped right hand. He's been one of their best bats this season and would be a huge loss if he misses time.

The Tigers will play on Wednesday night against the No. 6-seed Auburn Tigers at 8 pm CT. LSU hasn't played Auburn yet this season.
