Philadelphia Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni addressed outside linebacker Nolan Smith's recent arrest on Wednesday, saying the organization has handled the matter internally while emphasizing accountability and growth. Speaking during organized team activities on Wednesday, Sirianni declined to provide specifics about conversations between the Eagles and Smith but made it clear that the situation had been addressed inside the building.
Sirianni also indicated the details of those discussions would remain private.
Smith, 25, was arrested two Fridays ago in Georgia and faces accusations of speeding and reckless driving, according to the Twiggs County Sheriff's Office. A representative from the sheriff's office told ESPN that Smith was clocked traveling 135 mph in a 70-mph zone on Interstate 16 at approximately 10:41 p.m. Smith was booked and released roughly an hour later after posting bond, according to law enforcement officials.
A court date has been scheduled for July 14. Officials indicated that Smith would not need to appear if fines associated with the citations are paid.
The incident places Smith among several former Georgia players who have faced driving-related legal matters in recent years. Eagles teammate Jalen Carter received probation and a fine in 2023 after pleading no contest to misdemeanor reckless driving and racing charges connected to a January 2023 crash that killed former Georgia offensive lineman Devin Willock and recruiting staff member Chandler LeCroy.
Philadelphia selected Smith with the 30th overall pick in the 2023 NFL draft after a standout collegiate career at Georgia that also included Carter, Nakobe Dean, and Jordan Davis as part of one of college football's most dominant defenses. Smith enters a critical season for Philadelphia after taking a significant step forward in his development during 2025. He recorded 6.5 sacks during the regular season and added four more during the Eagles' postseason run while becoming a more consistent presence along Philadelphia's defensive front.
Over three seasons, Smith has totaled 10.5 sacks, 25 quarterback hits, and 10 tackles for loss while steadily expanding his role inside the defense.
The Eagles opened organized team activities on Tuesday and are continuing preparations for a 2026 season that includes substantial expectations following an offseason focused on schematic adjustments and roster development.
Philadelphia has historically preferred to handle player matters internally when possible, particularly during the offseason, and Sirianni's comments reflected that approach while reinforcing organizational expectations for accountability and decision-making.
