Tampa Bay Rays complete the sweep on Wednesday with a 4-0 shutout win against the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field.
The team now moves to 68-46 and holds a four-game lead over the New York Yankees in the AL East standings. Here's what you need to know from Wednesday's contest.
It was a great day for the Rays' offense as the team picked up runs quickly and early in the outing at Coors Field. They picked up two runs early in the first inning against Rockies pitcher Tomoyuki Sugano. The game began on a Victor Mesa Jr. triple, something that he would do twice in the game. He'd be brought in by Johnathan Aranda with an RBI sacrifice fly. The Rays' first baseman would later score the second run, following a bloop hit to left field by the red-hot Chandler Simpson.
Since the beginning of July, Simpson is hitting nearly a .400 batting average, and although most of his hits do not leave the infield, he has still become a very valuable asset to this Tampa Bay offense.
It was a birthday to remember for starting pitcher Nick Martinez, as the 36-year-old had one of his best starts of the season. After struggling in a big way in his last start against the Chicago White Sox, Martinez picked up his 11th win of the season, tying a career best that was set last year as a member of the Cincinnati Reds. He may have allowed six hits in the contest, but no runs scored. Martinez might not be the darling of the stat sheet, but he truly is one of the best pitchers in MLB this season.
The right-hander now moves to 11-3 on the season with a 2.65 ERA and has 73 strikeouts over 129 innings of work.
It's not just Martinez who had a great game on Wednesday, but the remainder of the Tampa Bay bullpen was flawless as well. Recently acquired Tyler Wells made his Rays debut following Martinez's start. He went 1.1 innings, striking out four batters and continuing to shut out. He picked up his twelfth hold of the season.
Garrett Cleavinger and Cam Boozer finished off the game to ensure that, over the last two contests, the Rays have gone 16 straight innings of pitching shutout baseball. A feat that could make this team very dangerous heading into the later months of the season.
The pitching streak started after a rough start from Freddy Peralta, who didn't have the best debut on Tuesday's start. Since then, the Rays' bullpen and starter Martinez have been stellar.
Tampa Bay will look to do it all over again as they travel to the Pacific Northwest to take on the Seattle Mariners. This will be the final three-game series of the season. These two teams will face off. Tampa Bay won the series last month, two games to one, at Tropicana Field. Drew Rasmussen will get the start for the Rays. He will face right-hander Logan Gilbert for the Mariners. First pitch is scheduled for 6:45 p.m. Eastern and will be available on Apple TV.
